The spirit of truth demands that we stand in solidarity with those who are marginalized, persecuted, and forgotten and advocate on their behalf. The spirit of truth demands bravery and boldness in the pursuit of justice. The spirit of truth is very much alive in the margins of society, and in the messiness of our lives, demanding that no one be orphaned.

We owe it to ourselves to be mindful of our own wisdom as to what our “needs” are as a community. We need to have the courage of the early Hellenists to put our needs out there for those in authority to understand “what” and “whom” we need in ministry.

Nevertheless, life-giving and empowering voices of women are rising across the world, in church and society. We have heard the voice of the Good Shepherd; we have been nourished by God’s gift of abundant life. With passion and compassion, we lift our voices to ask: Why is our church not listening to us? Why does our church not hear our voices?

As disciples of Christ, it is our baptismal and Eucharistic responsibility to bring Jesus into the fullness of his glory by standing in solidarity with a sister or brother who is struggling to reclaim his or her human dignity, by working to chip away at the walls of division and hatred; and to bear witness in the breaking of the bread that at the banquet of the Lord there is no room for hatred or division.

We don’t have two thousand years of tradition to give us answers to current crises. We have only faith and one another. How will our story of discipleship be told to future generations?

Like these women, we, too, believe and speak in our hearts and voices: “Jesus is risen as he said. Alleluia! He lives and is with us still. Let us rejoice and be glad.” Everything is new. It is time for us to Arise and meet the new dawn.

To move from pain and suffering to joy, we have to go through death so that we can live with Jesus. The good news is that he is with us and among us even when it seems hard to believe in anything.

We are continually called back to Holy Thursday... We are called back to Jesus' decision to wash his disciples' feet. And in that action we discover again and again who Jesus calls us to be in the Church and in the world.

We can stand with our God only insofar as we stand beside and wait in active and compassionate solidarity with children, women, and men who suffer concretely, unbeautifully, and actually in our world

I believe the examples of Martha and Mary are not presented to us in these texts to be compared as though one is superior to the other, as they are often interpreted. But rather, they need to be read through a holistic lens.

One of the invitations of this Lent, this extraordinary time, is to SEE those around us with new eyes recognizing, as God has, their extraordinariness.

I invite you to be open to the possibility of transformation, to be open to the gift of climbing that mountain with Jesus and seeing Jesus -- and your life -- in a brand new light.
